The Walking Dead
Series Length: 2 Seasons, 20 Episodes
Schedule: Sunday 9:00 PM et/pt on AMC
Genre: Drama
Description: The Walking Dead is a horror drama that airs on the AMC cable channel and tells the tale of a handful of survivors after a zombie apocalypse. Set mostly in rural Georgia, the story focuses on the efforts of a sheriff's deputy, Rick, to keep the group together and deal with the mounting problems of a world without law and dwindling supplies.
Other group members include Rick's pregnant wife Lori, his son Carl, partner Shane, attorney Andrea, survivalist Daryl, community-conscious Dale and pizza delivery driver Glenn. As time moves on and tensions mount, the group often finds itself facing moral dilemmas, becoming more divided and edging ever closer to an "every man for himself" mentality. Rick is especially affected by the changed world and the attitudes surrounding him, and he discovers there is an ambiguous gray area between right and wrong.
While the show features many grotesque, flesh-gobbling zombies, they only serve as a backdrop for the plight of the survivors, who are the true walking dead. Running short on food, medical support and places to hide, the group knows their options will soon run out and they will be forced to fight or die.
The Walking Dead has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama and has broken several records for a cable series. The final episode of the second season drew nearly 10 million viewers, making it the highest rated drama ever on basic cable. The third season is expected to begin in October 2012.

Genre: Drama
Description: Gossip Girl is one of the top American television dramas geared toward teenagers. Based on the series of young adult novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl was introduced to The CW in 2007. This nighttime drama is unique in that it is narrated by an omniscient character the viewer never sees; Gossip Girl is not only a fictional blog but also an invisible character on the show. The show focuses on a group of scandalous New York teenagers who live in the luxurious Upper East Side as well as the mystery of who is behind the Gossip Girl blog, which often reveals secret information about the central characters.
The initial season of the show focused on Serena van der Woodsen's return to the Upper East Side from her boarding school. Upon her return, Serena hopes to reconcile her close relationship with Blair Waldorf after she betrayed her in the worst way. Blair also happens to be the highly influential queen bee of her private school and can come up with a plan for revenge faster than she can snap her manicured fingers.
Gossip Girl also shows the evolving relationship between other characters. Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass are best friends who try to overcome in spite of the respective financial and moral failings of their fathers. Dan and Jenny Humphrey are initially considered lower class because they live in Brooklyn. They are both considered the 'ultimate insiders' as they explore their changing social status. Some of the character's parents are also prominent features of the show.
Gossip Girl is an award-winning show but it is winding down to its sixth and final season. The show has always been divided into half seasons and follows the characters from their last years in high school to their first years as adults.

Sons of Anarchy
Sons of Anarchy
Series Length: 4 Seasons, 53 Episodes
Schedule: Tuesday 10:00 PM et/pt on FX
Genre: Drama
Description: "Sons of Anarchy" is set in a quaint fictional town in Northern California called "Charming." It follows an outlaw motorcycle club and their adventures with family, street gangs, drug cartels, the ATF, the FBI, local and state law enforcement, white supremacists (including a bunch of guest appearances by Henry Rollins) and with each other. The show was created by Kurt Sutter, who also plays Otto Delaney in the series. The first season was began airing on FX September 2008.
Jackson "Jax" Teller is the main character and he is the son of one of the founding members of the club, John Teller. John's dead and his wife Gemma, played by Katey Sagal (of Married with Children fame), is married to the club's current president Clay, played by Ron Perlman. The story is largely a "coming of age" type of story in which Jax tries to find and secure his place within the club, his father's legacy, the direction of the club and his family.
The rest of the club is made up of several legacy members, their sons and new pledges. Most notable are Tig, Chibs, Opie and Juice (the names they are most referred to in the series). Tig is almost completely bereft of morals, but he's depicted in such a way that it's creepy and humorous at the same time. Chibs is an import from the Irish branch of the Sons and he's a surprisingly complex character. Opie is the son of another founding member who winds up losing his wife during a shooting that was meant for him. Juice has a personality that makes a person want to protect him from himself because it's clear that he's kind of naive but desperately wants to fit into some sort of family.
In around all of the clubs trials and tribulations with criminals and law enforcement, Jax's son is born to his drug-addicted wife, from whom he is estranged. Gemma manages to run her off while she helps Jax take care of his newborn son and begins to form a relationship with an old flame, Tara. Tara's a doctor who, despite her attempts to distance herself from the club, winds up completely embroiled in the drama.
The fifth season of "Sons of Anarchy" will begin airing in September 2012. At this point, we've seen Jax's son kidnapped and recovered, most of the club go to prison and Clay struggle to retain his hold as president of the club while wreaking havoc on its members. He's put out a hit on Tara, caused the death of Opie's wife, made a horrible deal with a cartel and a number of other badly planned catastrophes.
The show continues to, season after season, deliver an interesting plot with complex characters and surprisingly great acting. Jimmy Smitts will be joining the cast for the fifth season as well as a mentor to Jax and a Latino gang leader. With the ending of season four begging for some answers and emotional turmoil brewing among various characters, the fifth season is already looking good.

Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones
Series Length: 2 Seasons, 25 Episodes
Schedule: Sunday 9:00 PM et/pt on HBO
Genre: Drama
Description: HBO's Game of Thrones has brought epic fantasy into the mainstream. With interweaving storylines shot in multiple countries, this show is proving that magic and dragons can be sophisticated. Viewers love the complex plot, gorgeous backgrounds and ample nudity so typical of HBO shows.
Every week, Game of Thrones manages to shock viewers with incest, murder and betrayal. As five would-be kings battle for a single throne, royalty is killed, innocent men are tortured and dark magic is created in shadows. Heroes discuss assassinating teenage girls, monarchs kills infants and noble girls disguise themselves as pageboys. Even fans of the book series on which the show is based have been surprised by dramatic twists created by the show's producers.
Part of fans' love for Game of Thrones is due to the show's attention for detail. Producers hired a conlinguist to create a fantasy language for one set of characters. Lavish costumes and set pieces bring the medieval world to life. Truly ugly actors are cast for parts that demand unsightly appearances. A little person is one of the most popular characters. HBO truly brings the Game of Thrones world to life.
Magic is common on the show. Zombies and ice creatures threaten from the North. Dragons and a powerful princess are growing strong across the Narrow Sea. Face-changing assassins are penetrating the kingdom, and the Lord of Light's devotees are bringing fire and death to the capitol city.
Despite the dragons, shadow assassins and magical priestesses that populate Westeros, adults are enthralled by Game of Thrones. HBO's decision to gamble on a series of fantasy novels is paying off as the network infuses the show with frequent nudity and violence to keep viewers hooked.

The Vampire Diaries
Series Length: 3 Seasons, 66 Episodes
Schedule: Thursday 8:00 PM et/pt on The CW
Genre: Drama, Science Fiction, Vampire
Description: The Vampire Diaries is an American-made television show that airs on the CW. This action packed drama follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a 17 year-old teenager from Mystic Falls, Virginia. During the first season of the television show, viewers learn that Elena's parents died tragically in a car accident when their vehicle swerved off of Wickery Bridge. This bridge plays a major part in flashbacks and plots throughout the show.
Elena and her brother Jeremy now live with their aunt Jenna, attend high school and do what ordinary teenagers do. One day, things become not so ordinary when Elena meets Stefan Salvatore, a 162 year-old vampire. Stefan grew up in Mystic Falls and fell for the beautiful Katherine Pierce. Not knowing that she was a vampire, Katherine turned both Stefan and his brother Damen, who also loved her, into vampires. After finding out that the town has been over run with a major vampire population, the townspeople and council decide to lock the vampires away in a tomb for eternity. Stefan and Damen manage to escape, but Katherine goes missing. Thinking that this is where Katherine ended up, Stefan and Damen make it a mission to rescue her over the years.
After Stefan meets Elena for the first time, he notice an uncanny resemblance between her and Katherine. They look nearly exactly alike and no one is sure why. Elena doesn't find out about Katherine until she finds a picture of her in Stefan's room. By this point, Damen is back in town and is mystified when he sees Elena. Like Stefan, he wonders why she looks just like Katherine. Determined to open the tomb and find Katherine, Damen enlists the help of Elena's friend Bonny who is a witch.
The tomb is opened only to find out that Katherine is not in there. Damen is heartbroken knowing that Katherine never really cared for him because she left for over 100 years. We then find out that Elena was actually adopted. Her birth mother was a bit obsessed with vampires and eventually decided to become one. It is then discovered that Elena is Katherine's doppelganger. This makes Elena a prime target for many terrible things that are about to come.
Through it all, Jenna is never aware that Elena is dating a vampire or that vampires even exist. Trouble ensues when Klaus and his family come back into town and want to get revenge on Stefan and Damen. After finding out that Elena is the doppelganger, he feels that he must kill her in order to create hybrids of half vampire, half werewolves. Many people end up being killed due to Klaus, including Jenna. Klaus and his family's blood line are a huge plot in The Vampire Diaries.
Towards the end of Season 3, many disastrous things start to happen. Elena dies in a car accident off of Wickery Bridge, just like her parents did. However, it becomes known that she had vampire blood in her system and will now begin the transition into a vampire. We can expect to see many more twists during Season 4 of the Vampire Diaries.
